Ancient Ostia Tour

The Ancient Ostia Tour aims to guide you through the ruins of this large archeological site, situated near the modern city of Ostia and 30 kilometres to Rome.

In ancient times, Ostia was Rome’s seaport, with the Port of Claudio and Port of Traiano being the main trade centres.
Nowadays there are a number of places extremely worth visiting, though less famous than the ruins of the adjacent Rome.

The Ancient Ostia Tour will start at the Theatre, maybe the most beguiling place in Ostia Antica. It could hosts up to 4000 people and is still used today for theatrical shows and concerts. Some of the artists who have recently performed at the Theatre in Ostia Antica are: Vinicio Capossela, Mogwai, Kings of Convenience and The Mars Volta.

Then we will visit the Temple of Ercole, dedicated to the God Ercole Invictus, and characterized by its podium in tufa.
Another major symbol of the city is the Sinagoga, discovered in the 1960’s. It is the most ancient sinagogue in Europe, and the ruins today include a number of tall columns of the tabernacle, on whose capital is engraved the symbol of the menorah.

The Ancient Ostia Tour will end in via Ostiense, where you may admire the Necropolis, which holds tombs of the II century BC.
