Tivoli: Villa D’Este e Villa Adriana

Would you fancy going on a trip outside the city of Rome and explore the surroundings? Then Tivoli would be a perfect destination for you: children and adults alike enjoy taking a stroll around Villa d’Este and Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli, two beautiful green paradises recently declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Roman Emperor Hadrian ordered the construction of Hadrian’s Villa in the second century AD. The complex comprises the large and the small thermae, several palaces, the Maritime Theatre, and some libraries and temples, mostly in the Greek and Egyptian orders.

Villa d’Este, instead, was commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito d’Este in the XVI century, and it is a finest example of Renaissance architecture. Here you may specially admire the beautiful garden enhanced by a number of fountains: the Fontana del Bicchierone (literally Foutain of the Great Cup) which has been attributed to Bernini, the Fontana dell’Ovato, the Fontana della Rometta (little Rome) and the Hundred Fountains.
